A starting point, not a formal quote. It doesn't cover insurance, taxes, licensing, or replacing equipment. Work those into your hourly rate, or what looks like profit is really just costs you haven't counted.

How to price a detail

Detailing does not price off square footage. It prices off hours, and the hours move with the size of the vehicle, how bad the inside is, and which add-ons you are actually doing. Pick a flat package price without checking the hours and the hours become your problem.

Condition is what eats your day

A crossover that gets cleaned regularly and one that has not been touched in two years are the same vehicle on your price list and a two hour difference in your day. If your packages are flat priced with nothing for condition, the clean cars are paying for the bad ones. And the bad ones are the ones that call.

Charge for pet hair, every time

It is a separate job from an interior clean. It takes real time and it chews up your brushes. Throwing it in for free is how a two hour interior turns into four. This calculator puts it on its own line for that reason.

Mobile means the drive is part of the job

Coming to the customer is the thing they are paying for. If you are swallowing 40 minutes of driving on a $150 job, you are giving away the exact thing that makes you worth calling.

Jobs with more than one part

Doing two vehicles at the same address, or a detail plus a separate add-on? Price each one, add it to the job, and you get a quote with separate lines and one total. The drive and setup only get counted once, because you only drove there once.

Common questions

Should I quote before I see the car?

Give a range, not a number. Photos help but people always undersell how bad the inside is. A range you can hold beats a number you have to walk back in the driveway.

How should I price ceramic coating?

Coatings get priced on the prep, not the coating. The paint correction beforehand is where the hours go and it swings a lot depending on the paint. Quote it as its own job rather than a fixed price add-on.

Do I need a minimum charge?

Most mobile guys do. Once the drive and setup are counted, a quick exterior on a sedan across town usually comes out below what the trip costs you.

Are these hours right for me?

They are a starting point. Time a few real jobs at each size and adjust your hourly rate to match what you actually hit.
